What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is the use of medication in order to put a patient in a calm and relaxed state. It is also referred to as ‘relaxation dentistry’, ‘anxiety free dentistry’. Various sedative drugs such anxiolytics, depressants, and pain management are used to induce sedation. However, this is not the same as being unconscious during the procedure. It allows the patient to be at peace during the procedures. Moderate to Light IV sedation dentistry is quickly changing the stigma of going to the dentist.
One of the main reasons that sedation dentistry has become so popular is due to several benefits for both the patient and the dentist. The sedative drugs induce the patient into a stress free state as well as reduce memory of the treatment, and make the dental appointment a pleasant experience. At the same time, sedation makes the procedure easier for the dentist, allowing him to concentrate on performing the dental treatment with to a fully co-operative patient. For some patient groups, the use of sedation dentistry maybe the only way that they can get the dental care they need.
